This year science will be exploring 4 major concepts.  First, we learn about weather and atmosphere.  We will learn about the structure of the atmosphere along with major trends that effect our weather and climate.  Eventually we will learn about climate change.  Our second unit focus on Genetics and Heredity.  We will look at the way information is passed from parent to offspring, along with the effects that has on humans.  From cellular reproduction to mitosis and meiosis, our study ranges from small cellular interactions to their effects on the whole human body.  This leads into our third focus: The Human Body.  This is our largest unit as we explore each of the systems that help our bodies function.  The theme is homeostasis, the bodies constant effort to maintain a constant environment.  How do we balance oxygen and carbon dioxide?  How do we eliminate cellular and metabolic wastes so they don’t build up?  How do human activities like smoking or disease or injury effect the body?  Lastly, we will transition to Forces and Motion.  This is an introduction to basic physics.  We will look at forces like gravity and friction and how we can measure and calculate their effects on movement.

Science homework will be listed below as it is assigned.  This will be very different from math homework.  It is usually not assigned every day, and will not be based on a textbook.  Science books will be available to be checked out on an individual basis.  Science homework will usually be either writing assignments, worksheets, or questions to be answered.  Students will always have notes, handouts, or other resources to help them complete this work.  We have a very large amount of content to study which requires that students stay organized so all resources are available to them.

Many students struggle in terms of preparing for science tests.  This year we will focus on how to develop good study habits.  I will always assign a review sheet and spend 1 or 2 days in class reviewing all content and concepts.  If a student doesn’t feel prepared for a test, they should ask to stay after school to help before a test.  I am always willing to provide extra help if anyone wants it.  Please contact me at jbecker@wcpss.net with any questions or concerns.
